Ordered by a District Court, DVPO hearings are issued in response to a complaint by a person (the plaintiff) concerning physical abuse, or forthcoming threats of physical abuse. In response to the complaint, the Court may issue an order instructing the Defendant not to assault, threaten, or harass the plaintiff. The Court can also do much more when they feel it is the best interest of the victim. For example, the Court may: make impermanent resolutions concerning custody of children; order the defendant to attend anger management courses; or demand that the defendant stop contact with the plaintiff.
